Director of Congregational Care
Reports To: Executive Pastor
Position Type: Part-Time / Salary / Exempt / At-Will
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of Congregational Care serves as the primary leader for pastoral care across all three campuses of UMMMC. This position ensures that members and constituents receive spiritual, emotional, and practical support through coordinated pastoral care efforts, lay visitation teams, and intentional connection points. The Director of Congregational Care works collaboratively with the pastoral staff and volunteers to cultivate a culture of care that reflects the love and presence of Christ in the life of the church.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Congregational Care Leadership

Provide spiritual and emotional support to members and constituents, including hospital and home visits, pastoral counseling, and prayer.

Serve as the point person for congregational care needs across all campuses, ensuring a consistent and compassionate response.

Offer pastoral presence at funerals and memorial services as needed and support bereavement care efforts.

Maintain accurate and confidential records of care visits and pastoral interactions.
2. Visitation & Care Team Development

Recruit, train, and equip visitation and care teams to extend pastoral care to homebound members, those in medical facilities, and individuals experiencing life transitions.

Develop a structured system for regular follow-up with individuals in need of pastoral support.

Provide training resources for lay caregivers on topics such as active listening, grief support, and spiritual encouragement.
3. Coordination & Communication

Work closely with the Campus Pastors to ensure seamless integration of congregational care efforts across UMMMC.

Communicate regularly with ministry staff and the Executive Pastor about emerging pastoral needs and opportunities for support.

Utilize church communication channels (newsletters, social media, text line) to keep the congregation informed about care ministries and resources.
4. Sunday Worship Presence

Rotate between worshipping at First Church and Paris / Third Avenue campuses to foster relationships and provide pastoral presence.

Be available for prayer, conversation, and pastoral support before and after services.

Identify and follow up with those in need of additional care after worship gatherings.
5. Community Engagement & Partnerships

Build relationships with local healthcare facilities, nursing homes, and community organizations to enhance the church’s capacity for care.

Explore and develop support groups (e.g., grief support, caregivers’ groups) that align with the needs of the congregation and community.
QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred:
-
Credentialed as clergy in good standing (Local Pastor, Deacon, or Elder) in the United Methodist Church.

A Master of Divinity or equivalent from an accredited theological institution is preferred; however, a combination of formal education and significant experience in pastoral care, chaplaincy, or a related field will be considered.
Required:
-
Strong interpersonal and pastoral skills with the ability to connect with people across generations and backgrounds.

Experience in pastoral care, chaplaincy, or related ministry work with an emphasis on congregational care.

Leadership ability to develop and equip lay teams for effective ministry.

Commitment to the mission and values of UMMMC, with a passion for compassionate ministry.

Ability to travel between campuses within Mecosta County (valid driver’s license and access to transportation required).
