Director of Music Ministry

Reports To: Executive Pastor
Position Type: Part-Time

 

POSITION SUMMARY

United Methodist Ministries of Mecosta County (UMMMC) is seeking a passionate and creative Director of Music Ministries to lead and coordinate our church’s music ministry. This individual will direct the chancel choir, collaborate with other musical and motion-based ministries, recruit musicians from both the congregation and the broader community, and develop community music initiatives that align with our mission to equip disciples, foster innovation, and build partnerships to create lasting change.

 

The ideal candidate is a musician and leader who values a diversity of musical expressions, enjoys working with both traditional and contemporary styles, and has a heart for building relationships through music within both the church and the broader community.

  

RESPONSIBILITIES

 Worship & Congregational Music Leadership

  • Direct and rehearse the chancel choir, ensuring musical excellence and spiritual depth in performances.

  • Work with pastors, worship design team, and other musicians to enhance worship services with meaningful and engaging music.

  • Encourage and cultivate a culture of participation in worship music across all campuses.

  • Plan and prepare music selections that complement sermon themes and seasonal liturgical needs.

 

Recruitment & Development of Musicians

  • Actively recruit musicians and vocalists from within the church and the broader community to participate in worship services and special events.

  • Identify and mentor musicians and vocalists, fostering growth in their musical and spiritual gifts.

  • Create opportunities for new musicians, youth, and intergenerational groups to engage in music ministry.

 

Collaboration & Development of Music Ministries

  • Work alongside leaders of other musical/motion groups (e.g., praise teams, instrumental ensembles, liturgical dance, handbell choirs) to support and coordinate efforts.

  • Explore ways to integrate youth and children into the music ministry.

 

Community Engagement & Outreach

  • Develop and lead music-based outreach programs that connect the church to the broader Mecosta County community.

  • Foster relationships with local musicians, schools, and organizations to create partnerships around music and the arts.

  • Organize concerts, workshops, or community singing events to broaden engagement and invite new people into the life of the church.

 

Administrative & Organizational Duties

  • Coordinate rehearsals and performances, ensuring clear communication with volunteers and staff.

  • Attend staff meetings as needed to ensure alignment with UMMMC’s mission and goals.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Experience in choral direction and/or church music leadership.

  • Strong musicianship and vocal coaching skills.

  • Ability to work across various musical styles, from traditional hymns to contemporary worship.

  • A passion for community outreach and relationship-building through music.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

  • Ability to lead and inspire volunteers with grace and flexibility.
